Using Facebook to promote your business

by Brendan Will on March, 2009

Hey guys and girls,

Some of you maybe aware that you can only have one www.facebook.com account. Which meant it was near impossible to use Facebook for talking with friends and family and promoting a business. This would lead to many potential customers and family members getting very incoherent messages.

This made Facebook impractical for doing both business and personal until now. Facebook released a new feature this week which allows anyone with a normal account to create another identity for each and everyone of their business adventures. This feature is called Facebook Pages.

Facebook Pages which is almost identical to your normal profile so when someone befriends/follows your company they will get your company updates in their daily feed. So when you send out your cool 140 character update about a useful new product they have an option that lets them say to everyone that hey i like this. So what does this mean for your company?

Well lets say you get 200 people who follow your business. You send out a message about your latest company product and 10% of the people who follow you then hit that ‘like’ button beside your update. What happens now is damn cool. Your update is then placed into their feed. So your message is now sent out to their friends. I am not sure the average number of friends a person has on Facebook. So let’s pick a reasonable number like 40. You update has gone from being seen by 200 to 1000 people. 20 * 40 = 800 + initial 200 = 1000.

With Facebook being as massive as it is your update could go very far indeed. 140 million active users on Facebook and it grows by 6 million users every 10 days currently. It is a massive market to tap into.
